Ajattaras (also called Ajatar, Ajattaro or Aiatar) were evil female spirits living in the forests. Ajattaras misled and frightened hunters and other forest travelers, which is possibly where their name comes from (ajaa harhaan means "to mislead"). Typically an ajattara laid down next to a hunter sleeping in the woods, thus causing him to have nightmares.
