Kalma is the goddess of death and decay. She likes to linger in graveyards and cemeteries, and she is said to smell like corpses. Some sources state that she moves much like a puff of smoke.
Kalma lives in the Finnish Underworld, Tuonela, and she is the daughter of Tuoni and Tuonetar. She is accompanied and protected by Surma, a dog-like monster who guards the gates of Tuonela. She also has four sisters: Loviatar, Kipu-tyttö, Kivutar and Vammatar.
