Vellamo is a female figure who appears in spells related to fishing where the spellcaster is asking for a good catch. A water goddess of sorts, she is mentioned alongside Ahti, the god of water. She is thought to have been his wife or daughter. She is often called a mistress or a mother of water.[1] Therefore, she is sometimes connected to the goddess named Veden emo ("Mother of Water") who has a similar role as someone who gives fish. This is possibly related to an older tradition where water, earth and forest were called mothers. The Finno-Ugric Mari people from Mari El, Russia still see the elements like this.[2]
A rare name Vellimys appears in poems collected from Röntylä and Kinnulanniemi in Suomussalmi.[3][4] Her name resembles the word "velloa", which means the peaceful rocking motion of waves.
